We Are Survivors
Something that I realized the other day, is that people with mental illness are predisposed to being survivors. We have a mentality of not giving up. Yes there are rough times where we can barely get anything done. Yes there are days where our mental illness wins, and we feel like garbage because of it. There are also days where we give it our all and fight tooth and nail and claw our way through. We all learned a valuable life lesson, sometimes early in life, and usually the hard way. We do not give up easily.
If often feels like we’ve gotten the short end of the stick in life, and it’s true, we pulled the short straw. We are burdened with something that we never asked for, but we make the most of it. We are constantly beaten down by life, but we continue to get back up. We always rise like a phoenix from the ashes. If you’ve lived with death looming over you for long enough, nothing in life should scare you anymore. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. I’ve dealt with the idea of dying for a very long time, but I still have fears in life, death is just not one of them.
There is something to be said about not giving up. Despite having what appears from an outside view a good life, we often have the roughest go of things. We constantly live in this weird middle ground of having a good life, but having a terrible experience with mental illness. The truth of the matter is, that most of us will always be living with mental illness, fighting for every single day. We don’t have things handed to us, regardless of how nice our life really is. So do what we do best, and survive. Don’t give up, and continue to strive for the life that you want
